Southern Border Security? DHS Phones It In For Nicaraguan Migrants

A record 35,500 migrants from Nicaragua were encountered at America’s southern border in December. So what did the Department of Homeland Security do? It added Nicaraguans to a lengthening list of foreign nationals who can use a reservation system to enter this country.

DHS calls its system “rigorous security vetting,”but, in fact, the agency has no way to check for criminal histories in a diplomatically estranged nation that is a pariah of Latin America.

The Migration Policy Institute reports that more than 200,000 Nicaraguans fled their country last year. In response, neighboring Costa Rica, the nearest landing spot, imposed new restrictions on incoming Nicaraguans, citing widespread abuse of the asylum system. Costa Rican officials said many are simply seeking economic opportunities (not legal grounds for asylum) and would not be at risk of harm or persecution in their native land. Rebuffed, tens of thousands have headed north. . . . Read more about Southern Border Security? DHS Phones It In For Nicaraguan Migrants

Amid 2022’s massive migrant surge, numbers in ICE detention remain low

In 2022 the southern border once again saw enormous migrant numbers coming across as it had in 2021, with frequently more than 200,000 encounters a month. However, the number of illegal immigrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention has remained relatively low throughout the crisis, even as border apprehensions take up a greater share of the detained population. There were more than 2.3 migrant encounters in Fiscal Year 2022. So far, FY 2023, which began in October has been on track to outpace that number, as numbers have surged to the border in anticipation of the end of the Title 42 public health order. . . . Steady Stream of Migrants Flow into West Texas Border Town Before Title 42 Ends

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Groups of migrants crossed the Rio Grande as the Border Patrol braces for the end of Title 42 enforcement. The parties forded the river and surrendered to authorities near the heart of the city on Tuesday.

The groups, numbering up to 30 in size, walked from the riverbank and surrendered to Texas Army National Guard soldiers posted in the vicinity. The guardsmen detained the migrants and arranged for their transfer to Border Patrol custody.

The crossings are significantly reduced during the daylight hours, according to law enforcement sources in the Eagle Pass area. A source within CBP says . . . Read more about Steady Stream of Migrants Flow into West Texas Border Town Before Title 42 Ends

Letts: Sacrifices of Border Agents Go Ignored - It's Time for That to Stop

Three Customs and Border Protection agents were shot recently during a confrontation with suspected drug smugglers off the coast of Puerto Rico. One of the officers died.

The two smugglers were also shot during the Nov. 17 incident, and one died.

The sacrifice of the CBP agent who died should have been something that politicians praised, as would have happened if a service member or police officer had died in the line of duty. . . . Read more about Letts: Sacrifices of Border Agents Go Ignored - It's Time for That to Stop

IRLI Defends Florida in Catch-and-Release Suit

WASHINGTON—The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a Florida federal district court opposing the Biden administration’s latest attempt to rid itself of the state of Florida’s lawsuit challenging its policy of catching and releasing illegal aliens.

In moving for summary judgment against Florida, the administration claims it has unbounded discretion about whether to detain and deport illegal aliens, and so its policy of simply not enforcing the law cannot be reviewed by a court. In its brief, IRLI shows that, in fact, Congress very clearly and sharply limited the administration’s discretion when it mandated that illegal aliens be detained and removed from the country. . . . Treasury Department Investigating DeSantis Illegal Immigrant Flights to Martha’s Vineyard

The Biden administration opened an investigation into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s flight of illegal immigrants from the U.S.-Mexico border to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, last month.

The Treasury Department’s inspector general confirmed it is evaluating whether DeSantis allegedly misused COVID-19 relief funds to send the illegal aliens to the wealthy liberal hotspot, said Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) on Wednesday.

A Treasury Department inspector general letter (pdf), dated Oct. 7 and posted by the senator’s office Wednesday, told Markey and other members of Congress that it will evaluate Florida’s COVID-19-related spending. . . . Border Patrol Audit Shows Crucial Step Being Skipped, Harming Americans and Migrants Alike

A recent report issued by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG) contains alarming data about the U.S. Border Patrol’s mishandling of alien personal data during the current border crisis. Coverage on the report leaves out the practical effects of this mishandling, which threatens to leave potentially hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens untraceable and in legal limbo.

In a sample of the nearly 400,000 illegal aliens released into the U.S. during a six-month period in 2021, more than one-fourth were not issued alien registration numbers (A-numbers). These numbers are tied to individual files with biographical information and are essential for virtually every government function related to migration. . . . In a Political Power Play, ICE Agents Are Frozen Out by Big Labor Bosses

Power politics and union clout combined last week to quash the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Council. The move leaves 7,600 agency employees, mostly deportation officers, without collective bargaining protection, and exposes whistleblowers to retaliation or even termination. . . .
