The 2013 session of the Oregon Legislature is drawing to a close. What that means to Protect Oregon Driver Licenses is that we have only 90 days sine die (from adjournment) to gather the 58,142 valid signatures we need to qualify and to get the SB 833 referendum on the November 2014 ballot.
So many of you are working so very hard and PODL appreciates each and every one of you. But, now we need to really step on the gas and drive this buggy over the finish line with room to spare.
For those of you that have not yet started collecting signatures, I urge you to get started ASAP. It's amazing to me how easy it is to collect signatures for this particular issue. Remember, all we are doing is getting the new Legislation, SB 833 - giving driver privilege cards to illegal aliens - on the ballot so that Oregon voters have the opportunity to decide if they want this kind of law in our state.
There is no need to debate the immigration issue (which takes time away from signature gathering, too).
Simply ask: Do you think Oregon voters should have the opportunity to vote on SB 833 - a new law giving driver privilege cards to illegal aliens.
Most likely that's all you will need to say. It's that easy! So get out there, get going and start collecting signatures! Our state's future depends on you!

Please continue to call Congress and urge Senators to VOTE NO on S. 744, a monstrous disaster in the making.
The Senate just voted 67-27 to limit debate and amendments on the Corker-Hoeven amendment to the S. 744 amnesty bill.
That means the 1,100+ page bill as amended by 119 pages of amendments today can come to a vote as early as Wednesday morning. The final cloture vote (requiring 60 votes) on the whole bill could be as early as Thursday morning.

Attention Registered Voters in OREGON It doesn't get much easier than this folks. An issue dedicated website is now open containing all the information you need about SB 833 and the Protect Oregon Driver Licenses referendum. The URL is: http://www.protectoregondl.org/
You can view a complete copy of SB 833 and the single signature petition on the site.
SB 833 signed bill. This is the full bill passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor on May 1, 2013 giving driver privilege cards to illegal aliens.
Petition signature sheet (electronic version). This is a single signature sheet. It includes a summary of SB 833 written in the Secretary of State's office. To sign the petition, simply print this sheet on white paper only - colored paper is not allowed. Then follow instructions on the sheet. Mail signed petition sheets to the address below. Note: Signature sheets are not to be printed out and distributed. They are for personal use only.
The Signature Sheet may appear confusing at first. It is a standard form used by the Secretary of State for any bill passed on which citizens wish to file a Referendum. The top section text is supplied by the Secretary of State and identifies the substance of the bill in question. The bottom section is where citizens send a message, by signing the petition, to the Secretary of State requesting a vote by the people. The reference to full and correct copy of the text refers in our case, to SB 833 as passed.
The longer, 10-signature sheets are now available upon request. Please email or call us and let us know how many signature sheets (10 names each) you would like to have sent to you. We need your help collecting signatures. There are hundreds of opportunities at which to collect signatures in the summer. And remember your friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers may all be interested in participating.

They will discuss instate tuition (House Bill 2787), drivers licenses for illegal immigrants (Senate Bill 833), and a referendum being launched by OFIR to enable Oregonians to vote on these very important issues.

We will be participating in the National 1986 Remembrance Day, which is designed for us all to reflect on the impact of the mass amnesty bill passed in 1986.
Speakers will address the National Amnesty bill now circulating through Congress and highlight the most egregious aspects of the bill.
Legislators Rep. Kim Thatcher and Sal Esquivel will speak about the impact of illegal immigration on Oregonians.
Also, as many of you already know, a referendum to STOP SB833 (a law issuing driver privilege cards to illegal aliens) before it is enacted has been filed by "Protect Oregon Driver Licenses" .
Your help is needed to collect signatures of Oregon's registered voters. We need 58,142 signatures by mid September (90 days after the last day of this Legislative session). Our goal is to get SB833 on the ballot and give Oregon's citizen's a voice on the issue...with their NO VOTE in November 2014.
On tuesday, at the Capitol, "Protect Oregon Driver Licenses" will have packets with all you need to collect signatures. Please stop by and pick one up. We need all hands on deck to get the signatures we need by the deadline.
Caution: Because the Legislature is still in session, signatures may NOT be collected on Capitol grounds.
Your financial contribution would be greatly appreciated, too. The costs involved in operating such an undertaking are enormous. We would appreciate your help with a contribution of any size to help offset these expenses.

We think Oregon citizens should decide, with their vote, if this is what we want in our state.

We are so energized by the excitement of longtime OFIR members as well as so many new people wanting to get involved to help overturn SB833 by a vote of the people. We are all outraged that so many Oregon Legislators think that the demands of foreign nationals illegally in our country are more important than what's best for Oregon's citizens and legal residents.
We want to bring everyone up to speed on OFIR filing a referendum on Senate Bill 833.
The OFIR phone line has been flooded with calls and hundreds of e-mails! OFIR's volunteer board members have been on a number of TV news and radio talk shows all over Oregon this week. People from all over the state and even some folks from other states have called offering help to overturn SB 833.
Currently we are filling out the necessary forms with the Secretary of States Elections Office. It is not an easy process. In addition to a number of other tasks we will be building a new website specific for the referendum, opening a campaign account, organizing committee leaders, etc. Please bear with us.
A few specifics regarding the referendum process:
We will be filing paperwork of intent, getting approval and getting petition styles approved this coming week.
Then, we will need to gather about 59,000* valid signatures. *We will actually need to collect about 80,000 signatures to offset errors, duplicates, unregistered voters etc. Accuracy and legibility are crucial to our success. We've heard stories of opponents attempting to sign petition sheets multiple times using fraudulent names in an effort to have all the signatures thrown out.
We will have ONLY 90 days following the end of the legislative session to collect the signatures we need...but we can start as soon as we get the go ahead form the Secretary of State's office..
The referendum will be the exact same wording as Senate Bill 833. In essence voters will have the same opportunity as a state legislator to vote for or against giving illegal aliens Oregon driver licenses.
There will be both online petitions as well as the standard 10 lined signature sheets. We are looking into other options, as well.
We fully expect our opponents to spend alot of money in an attempt to prevent citizens from voting on this important issue. The pro-illegal alien supporters brought in expensive lobbyists to pressure state legislators to pass SB 833.
If anyone can contribute financially to OFIR's defeat SB833 campaign it would be most appreciated! We ask that you give generously to support this project...but please, give only what you can afford.
Just as soon as the referendum forms are available we will let you know so we can all get started.
The next OFIR meeting is scheduled for 2:00, Saturday, June 1, at the Best Western Inn in Salem, 3125 Ryan Dr, SE, just west of I-5, Exit 253, across from Costco. In the meanwhile, you could start making a list of people and places where you could collect signatures.

Hours after Gov. John Kitzhaber signed it today, opponents said they would seek to force a statewide election on a bill allowing four-year driver’s cards to those who cannot prove legal presence to obtain an Oregon driver’s license.
Sponsors would have to gather 58,142 valid signatures and file them by Sept. 26, which is 90 days after the targeted adjournment of the 2013 Legislature on June 28. If the referendum qualified for the ballot, voters would decide the issue in November 2014, although lawmakers could provide for a different election date.
“It’s a huge undertaking, but we do not feel Oregonians have been represented in this building,” said Cynthia Kendoll of Salem, president of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, the chief group in opposition to Senate Bill 833. “Our goal is to make certain that people have the opportunity to vote on this.”
The referendum effort does not become official until the secretary of state certifies the process.
SB 833, which Kitzhaber signed at a May Day rally on the Capitol steps, would take effect on Jan. 1 if opponents do not get the required signatures. If they do, the bill would be suspended until the statewide vote.
Other than proof of legal presence in the United States, which lawmakers in 2008 made a requirement of obtaining a driver’s license, applicants for driver’s cards still would have to show proof of identity and date of birth, and pass written and driving-skills tests. Cards would be good for four years, half the eight years for a regular license.
Kendoll said lawmakers took barely one month to consider the bill. It was introduced on April 2, the same day that Kitzhaber signed into law in-state tuition rates for some immigrant students whose parents brought them into the United State illegally as children. That bill can be challenged legally in a suit filed with the Oregon Supreme Court, but House Bill 2787 is not subject to a referendum because an emergency clause is attached.
The House gave final legislative approval to it Tuesday on a 38-20 vote.
Kendoll’s group has launched previous efforts at ballot initiatives, which have a higher requirement for signatures, but none qualified for a statewide election.
Four other states have allowed alternatives to licenses meeting requirements of the federal Real ID Act: Illinois, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. Those alternatives are authorized by federal law, but cannot be used for federal identification purposes, such as entering federal buildings or boarding commercial aircraft.
