Talking Points for your consideration:

You were responsible for shutting down the federal government, not Republicans. And for what? To amnesty illegal aliens. You're playing a destructive political game. You knew negotiations were ongoing. Do not vote for another shutdown.

You are pushing a legalization for so-called Dreamers but don't care what caused these young people to be in the country illegally in the first place. Their parents brought them while seeking to work here illegally. We'll be in this situation again unless we make it hard for employers to hire unlawful workers. That's why I want you to support mandatory E-Verify workplace eligibility checks for all employers. Don't subject another generation of young people to the same situation.

Our immigration system should help American workers get a decent pay raise and have a higher standard of living. That's why Sen. Tom Cotton introduced the RAISE Act, which would cut legal immigration from about one million per year to 500,000. I strongly support the bill because it will reduce job competition, including for the 50 million working-age Americans not in the workforce. Please co-sponsor the RAISE Act. Stand with American workers, not anti-American business owners who want more job competition to reduce wages.

The Visa Lottery must be terminated because it threatens our national security, as evidenced by the October 31 New York City terrorist attack by lottery winner Sayfullo Saipov. The program is fraud-ridden, because it has low application standards, and draws from nations that are state sponsors of terror or are known to harbor terrorist organizations. This dangerous combination made the program the subject of numerous congressional oversight hearings and a target for repeal. Please support a repeal of the Visa Lottery.

A biometric entry/exit system was a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission after it learned that several of the hijackers had overstayed their visas. But despite Congressional approval and funding, the last two administrations failed to implement this essential system for tracking and removing visa over-stayers. There is no excuse for further delays in these dangerous times, so I want you to help get this done.

Southern Oregon Legislators Host Town Hall January 25th in Eagle Point

(Salem)  Two Southern Oregon lawmakers will hold a Legislative Town Hall Wednesday January 25th in Eagle Point to preview some of the issues expected to be debated during the upcoming 2017 Session at the State Capitol in Salem.

The Town Hall starts at 6 pm on January 25th and is co-sponsored by State Representative Duane Stark (R-Grants Pass) and State Representative Sal Esquivel (R-Medford). Local residents are invited to attend the event which will be held at Eagle Point City Hall, 17 South Buchanan Avenue in Eagle Point.

“It’s important for us to touch bases with citizens in Southern Oregon before the legislative session gets underway this year,” said Representative Stark. “I wish we could host events like this in every corner of both of our legislative districts. Given the time constraints, we selected a location between both districts so we could have an opportunity to talk to people about the things that matter most in their lives.”

“There will be some significant challenges this time around,” said Representative Esquivel. “The state budget is going to mean some tough choices on critical issues such as human services, public safety, education, and others. There simply aren’t enough funds to go around for every program that folks want to see funded.”

For those who can’t make it to the Town Hall they can reach the legislators using the contact information below:

Five immigration questions to ask your Congressman during the August recess.

1. How can we afford an amnesty for illegal immigrants?

We can't. Over their lifetimes, the estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants would cost federal, state, and local taxpayers trillions of dollars, because they will consume significantly more in government benefits and services than they pay in taxes. Amnesty for millions of predominantly low-skilled illegal immigrants also will depress wages for low-skilled Americans and make a tough job market more difficult.

2. If illegal immigrants win amnesty, how is that fair to the 4.5 million who are waiting to enter the United States legally?

It isn't fair. America prides itself on the rule of law. As Americans, we should not allow those who break our laws to be rewarded-especially at the expense of those who are abiding by the rules. Rather than adequately streamlining our legalization system, some in Congress are pushing a new "path to citizenship" that grants amnesty to those who broke the law.

3. Can we ensure that a House-passed immigration bill doesn't become a vehicle, in a deal with the Senate, for blanket amnesty?

No, we can't. With massive costs to taxpayers and carve-outs for special interests, the Senate-passed bill eerily resembles Obamacare in its unnecessary complexity. Even House members who correctly view the Senate's "comprehensive" bill as a failed approach must be cognizant of the push to use any House-passed measure as a means to enact the Senate provisions. If conversations begin between the House and Senate on a compromise, major sections of the Senate bill-including amnesty-will be part of that deal.

4. Does Congress need to pass new legislation to secure the border and strengthen interior enforcement?

No. Current laws can be used to settle our border security and interior enforcement problems. The reason those laws aren't working is simple: We aren't enforcing them. By way of executive orders and selective enforcement, the Obama Administration has undermined efforts to fix our system and placed unwarranted burdens on the agents in charge of carrying out these laws.

5. Is there any guarantee that we won't face this problem again with millions of new illegal immigrants in the future?

No. We should keep a close eye on all proposals. In 1986, proponents of "reform" promised the American people that if Congress passed an amnesty-first immigration bill, we wouldn't have to go through this debate again. We were told to trust Congress to put together an amnesty bill that would be fair and prevent illegal immigration once and for all. Fast forward to now, and we're experiencing the same problems but on a larger scale. If Congress doesn't secure the border first to stop the flow of illegal immigration and also enforce our laws, we will find ourselves back in the same situation. The Congressional Budget Office projected that if it the Senate bill became law, millions of new illegal immigrants would be here within a few decades.

Below is a list of Republicans who have been targeted by the Democrats who want the House to pass an immigration bill.

Pick the members from your state, you know what to ask them.

I would suggest that in your message to them, either in person or at a town hall meeting, you also say that if the House passes any kind of immigration legislation that you will be demanding that they oust John Boehner as Speaker.

Townhall opportunities coming up

Alert date:
August 1, 2013
Alert body:

Congress will adjourn at the end of the week for summer recess. Your elected officials will be "coming home" to their constituents and a full schedule of Town Hall meetings.

It is your opportunity and your responsibility as a citizen, to attend the Town Hall meetings and tell your Representatives, in person, how you feel about the massive amnesty bill hanging out in the House. S 744 is such a massive, horrible bill with so many loopholes and built in problems that will virtually ruin the US as we know it, that we must kill this bill before it ever gets the chance to leave the House this fall.

Please, go to your local Town Hall meetings and tell your Representatives, in no uncertain terms, that you DO NOT want an amnesty bill of any kind...PERIOD! Members of Congress MUST hear this repeatedly, loud and clear, from their constituents!

OFIR will post the Townhall schedules as they become available. Check back often.

Rep. Kurt Schrader To Hold Town Hall Meetings in Milwaukie and Salem

Rep. Schrader will be holding town hall meetings in Milwaukie and Salem on Tuesday, January 29th and Wednesday, January 30th.

He said, in his announcement, “With the ongoing fiscal crisis, I will discuss the need for Congress to pass a big, bold deficit reduction and jobs package that puts everything on the table -- including spending cuts and tax and entitlement reforms -- and gets America's economy humming again. I hope to see you there, and I look forward to your feedback.”

Milwaukie Town Hall Meeting

Date: Tuesday, January 29th

Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Location: Milwaukie Center, 5440 SE Kellogg Avenue, Milwaukie 97222

Salem Town Hall Meeting

Date: Wednesday, January 30th

Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Location: Salem Library, Loucks Auditorium, 585 Liberty Street SE, Salem 97301

Please plan to attend and ask questions about Rep. Schrader’s immigration views.

----------------------------------------------------

President Obama recently announced as a high priority, enactment by Congress of an amnesty for illegal aliens. Leaders of the Democratic Party support this, as well as some in the Republican Party.

Amnesty will hurt all citizens, employed and unemployed, by greatly increasing numbers of legal job seekers at a time of grave economic stress, and by inflating the population when our environment is already seriously degraded from overpopulation. Seven massive amnesties have been passed in recent years, each one resulting in ever-increasing numbers of illegal immigrants.

The recent Associated Press-Roper poll claiming that the public supports amnesty was based on a question designed to elicit a Yes answer. Read this critique by Ira Mehman of FAIR.

Here’s a good article on the best way to stop illegal immigration: “Attrition Through Enforcement Is the True Middle-ground Solution.” A 2012 poll showed that 75% of likely voters support a mandatory verification system in dealing with illegal immigration.

Thank you for attending, and please let OFIR know if questions on immigration were asked and what Rep. Schrader’s response was. Email OFIR at ofir@oregonir.org Read more about Rep. Kurt Schrader To Hold Town Hall Meetings in Milwaukie and Salem

Ask the tough questions, ask Rep. Bonamici where she stands on immigration issues

Alert date:
August 17, 2012
Alert body:

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici claims that getting Americans back to work and rebuilding the economy is her number one goal. But, why has she refused to co-sponsor the Legal Workforce Act or any other E-Verify bills? This bill would mandate E-Verify nationwide, opening up to 7 million jobs for Americans and legal workers.

In fact, this bill would would put more Americans back to work than any other policy being discussed in Congress today. Check out the chart. Show it to Rep. Bonamici.

If you look at Rep. Bonamici's grade card, Rep. Bonamici has voted for amnesty twice! Why is Rep. Bonamici for policies that will further increase competition in an already over-crowded job market? 20 million Americans cannot find full time work, they certainly do not need to have illegal aliens to compete with too!

There is still time for Rep. Bonamici to do the right thing this congress. Co-sponsoring the Legal Workforce Act is a big one. There are two bills introduced by fellow House Democrats that Rep. Bonamici could co-sponsor. She can also challenge the leadership of both parties who want to give out even more work permits than we already do each year.

Rep. Bonamici will be hosting town hall meetings around her district the next several days.

We are asking you to participate in the town hall and ask Rep. Bonamici about her immigration record.

Thursday, August 23, 2012, 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m.

Friday, August 24, 2012, 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m.
Astoria Senior Center, 1111 Exchange Street, Astoria, OR

Some talking points:

Congresswoman Bonamici, there are 20 million Americans who cannot find full time work while millions of illegal aliens are working in non-agricultural jobs. This isn't fair to American workers! Fellow House Democrat Rep. DeFazio has sponsored an E-Verify bill, please co-sponsor his bill and prove to me your number one priority is getting Oregonians back to work!

Rep. Bonamici, Washington gives out over 1 million work permits every year for new immigrants. With millions of Americans and recent immigrants already unemployed, why are we bringing one million more workers here every year? Do you support lowering this number?

If you cannot attend an event, drop off Rep. Bonamici's grade card at her local offices or give her a call.
