Oregonians frustrated with what’s happening in the Oregon now and in the State Legislature and Congress can learn more about candidates in the November election, and get involved with a campaign.

Oregon’s Congressional delegation has a dismal record on protecting the interests of U.S. citizens in immigration policy.  Most of the delegation has been in office for many years, and have consistently voted for lax to no controls on immigration.  We see the results in unsustainable population growth, overcrowding, degradation of the environment and multiple other ill effects.  Oregon’s State Legislature, Governor, and Attorney General have also opposed reasonable controls over immigration.

Here’s how to find Oregon candidates who do support the best interests of citizens in immigration policy: 

The Oregon Abigail Adams Voter Education Project has already begun posting information on candidates in the 2020 election, with links to their websites.  You can check there to see what’s available now for your districts.  If you don’t know which your districts are, you can enter your address on the form here and find out.

As of mid-August, it’s still fairly early in this year’s election calendar, and the OAAVEP is continuously adding more data to its site.  In the past they have posted very useful comparison charts on some issues, including immigration.  See their postings thus far for the 2020 election at https://oregonabigailadams.wordpress.com/2020-general-election , and for the 2018 election here.

The national immigration reform organization, NumbersUSA, is posting and constantly updating facts about candidates’ views.  NumbersUSA is particularly helpful about the positions of candidates for Congress, while they also cover state campaigns.  NumbersUSA has been in existence for many years and has an invaluable record of votes by Congresspersons on immigration bills, scoring the records of each member with a letter grade, A-plus to F-minus.  They offer a questionnaire to candidates, and Alex Skarlatos, running for CD 4 against long-time incumbent Peter DeFazio, is the only Oregon candidate for Congress who has made any replies so far.

The questions asked in the OAAVEP’s questionnaire vary slightly according to the office sought.  Here are the questions for U.S. House of Representatives candidates:

24         Do you support requiring all employers to use the Federal E-Verify system to determine the employee's work eligibility status to work in the United States?

25        Do you support requiring proof that immigration laws are being enforced before laws granting amnesty are considered?

26         Do you support withholding federal funds to sanctuary cities that do not cooperate in federal immigration law enforcement?                                      

27         Do you support blocking ICE from state records when investigating criminal immigrants?       

28         Do you support stronger border security to prevent illegal aliens and illegal drugs from entering the U.S.?   

29         Do you support requiring aliens counted in the census to not be used for purposes of redistricting?

30         Do you support ending DACA?

In earlier elections also, the OAAVEP collected detailed information on candidates’ positions on a number of important issues, including key questions about the candidate’s position on immigration.  You can see what some of them said about immigration in the 2018 and 2016 Primary campaigns on the OFIR website. Filling out the questionnaire is up to the candidate, and many of them have cooperated in recent years.

Please share your knowledge with family, friends and acquaintances

Many people in Oregon and other states still believe that illegal aliens living and working in this country do no harm and see no problem in accepting their presence.  But this view ignores the widespread falsification of identities which does harm individual U.S. citizens.  The competition from illegal alien workers often causes a drop in wage levels - and that hurts all workers.  Worse still, acceptance of illegal immigration has led to more open borders policies, putting U.S. sovereignty at risk.

The article below highlights an actual case of enforcement that is usually cast narrowly by most media as pointless cruelty.  Thanks to Stephen Dinan for reporting a more complete picture.

Most of the 680 illegal immigrants nabbed in August’s immigration raids at poultry plants in Mississippi worked under stolen American identities, the Department of Homeland Security’s top investigator told Congress Thursday, rebuffing Democrats who insisted the “undocumented” workers were doing no harm.

“They stole the IDs of 400 U.S. citizens,” said Jere Miles, who leads Homeland Security Investigations’ New Orleans office. “Where’s their voice?”

Mr. Miles was defending the Aug. 7 operations against seven processing plants as both a success and a deterrent to future illegal immigrants, battling with Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee who called a field hearing in Mississippi to criticize the raids. …

Mr. Miles said the families are in no different position than any other instance where a parent runs afoul of the law and is incarcerated, forcing spouses and children to figure things out.

Democrats challenged Mr. Miles on whether anyone nabbed had major criminal rap sheets. He ticked off some felony cases against some of the people caught, but then pointed out that 400 of them were working in the U.S. on fraudulent identities he said were stolen from Americans.

“Is that not a serious crime?” he demanded of Democrats.

At that point Mr. Thompson cut him off.

“Be quiet,” the chairman ordered. …

To Democrats who fretted that the businesses were being let off the hook, Mr. Miles urged patience. Today, Oregonians for Immigration Reform expressed anger and disappointment at Gov. Kate Brown's signing, on August 9, 2019, of House Bill 2015, which will provide Oregon driver licenses to illegal aliens.

"In 2014, our group spearheaded the ballot measure via which Oregonians, by a two-to-one margin, rejected the 2013  Legislature's approval of 'driver cards' for foreigners here illegally," said OFIR president Cynthia Kendoll.  "Yesterday, when she signed House Bill 2015, Gov. Brown told those Oregonians what their vote meant to her and to her accomplices in the Legislature: absolutely nothing."

Rather than honor the clearly-expressed mandate of those they were elected to serve, Kendoll continued, "our governor and Legislature chose to undermine U.S. laws against illegal entry and, instead, reward foreigners who have broken into our nation."

Illegal aliens, said OFIR communications director Jim Ludwick, "steal jobs from Oregonians, particularly from racial minorities and young people just beginning their working lives.  As well, the state and local government services they consume cost Oregonians more than $1 billion a year."

And, continued Ludwick, "more than 900 foreign nationals with federal immigration detainers -- the vast majority of them here illegally -- are inmates in our state prisons.  Most of them have committed violent crimes against innocent Oregonians."

After all this, concluded Ludwick, "what do our governor and Legislature do?  Pass a law to give illegal aliens driver licenses and, thereby, to encourage even more of them to come to our state."

In the history of Oregon politics, Kendoll noted, "one would be hard-pressed to find an instance where lawmakers more starkly betrayed both their constituents' best interests and clearly-expressed will."
